About the La Grange Utilities Commission

The original water works for the City of LaGrange was constructed in 1930. What is now known as Mac’s Lakes was the City’s water source. A water treatment plant was situated adjacent to lake’s dam to remove contaminants prior to distribution to the City’s residences. In June 1957 there were 591 metered water customers in the City. For the year approximately 30,843,700 gallons of water was treated and pumped. A 40-year agreement was signed with the Ohio River-Oldham Water District on June 21, 1965 to purchase water pumped from wells in Westport.

A City ordinance dated March 5, 1958 created the LaGrange Utilities Commission combining water and sewer operations. Bonds for $325,000 were issued in 1958 to construct the first municipal sewage treatment plant in Oldham County. To comply with the Federal Clean Water Act, in 1984 with grant funding assistance from EPA a $2.45 million wastewater collection and treatment project was completed. Most all facilities constructed in 1984 are still in service today.

The Utility Commission of LaGrange is owned by residents of LaGrange. It is an agency of the City which was created to operate independently in order to minimize political interference which is not always in the best long term interest of the City’s residents. This independence has helped the Utility Commission maintain the lowest sewer rates and the lowest combined water and sewer rates in Oldham County.

The Utility Commission of LaGrange consists of 5 members who may be residents and/or customers. One member of the Commission is appointed from the City Council. The commission meeting is the second Monday of every month at 4PM. As an agency of the City, the Utility Commission has charge of general supervision and control of operation and maintenance of water works and wastewater system. The Utility is funded solely by water and sewer service charges, not taxpayers.
